You’ll probably recognise at least one of these voices. It's a simple tale we can probably all relate to: boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love with each other, then. This, along with having to follow an overly annoying couple's story, left me feeling ready to break up and move on by the end. Unfortunately, there are too many puzzles that have too little explanation as to how they’re supposed to work, which starts to confuse matters. When the puzzles work, the world-within-a-world is a joy to explore and play with. Like a more romantically focused Superliminal, you must overcome physical obstacles by manipulating model-sized components to affect their life-sized counterparts in beautiful 3D settings whilst also changing your own perspective of your shifting relationship. Yet that's how Maquette, from developers Graceful Decay, plays out. This is a game which would well and truly benefit from a complete excising of its narrative.Love can be many things, but the basis for a first-person recursive puzzle game is a new one. I mean this without exaggeration: it is not possible to create gameplay sufficiently enjoyable to counterbalance Maqeutte's voiceover scenes in which two flat characters quip tritely as a coloring book picture slowly fills in like a loading screen from the pits of hell. Except in the case of Maquette, we must live with the knowledge that this is a fully scripted disaster. What we're left to experience is something like a very sweaty, uneventful scene at an amateur improv theater. The voice talent makes a valiant effort to breathe some life into the script, but there's just nothing there. The challenge as a player is to get the maximum enjoyment out of this interesting mechanic while tuning out the narrative as much as possible. There is an interesting gameplay mechanic at the core of Maquette, though it's executed rather poorly. If you are a complectionist, you can easily do 100% at this game within four hours. A good game to play in a weekend and chill out. Overall, it’s a nice puzzle game that will not stress you out. I thing they could have worked better on sound design. Don’t get me wrong, the game has a good well-suited soundtrack, but it’s played just in the beginning of each chapter, and then you will be hearing just the silent ambient noise. And if you find yourself in that situation, you’ll feel lonely with the silence of the game. It’s something that you’ll probably won’t be spending dozens of minutes to figure out what to do. I like how the game gives you no hint on what to do and encourage you to explore the scenery and try things out. The game plays with that to construct puzzles in a simple manner, there is not much variation on how you manipulate objects or place them, but is effective. Placing objects in the small “maquette” and seeing it recursively generated outside is a cool effect and reminds me of that “infinite mirror effect”. The recursive scenery is beautifully crafted which serves as a visual metaphor for constructing the narrative and gives you a fun sense of scale. There are some cliches, but is well written overall.
